Alex is a dual-qualified accountant in Germany and the UK, where he is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
Alex advises international corporates, primarily from German speaking countries and the US, on global expansion projects, with a focus on setting up operations in the UK. He is recognised as an international tax expert and speaks regularly at tax conferences, appears on radio and TV and also writes tax related articles and commentaries for a variety of publishers and newspapers. He has also been invited by the German courts to provide his opinion as an expert on cross-border tax dispute cases between the UK and Germany.
Alex plays an active part in the German business community in the UK. He is a board member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Germany and maintains good relationships with the British Swiss Chamber and the Austrian Trade Commission in London.
Phillip has a broad range of project management, workplace consultancy and facilities management experience, combined with a depth of management skills gained through running a successful project management and consultancy business with a focus on quality and customer satisfaction. After working for RPS and CB Richard Ellis, he has been Managing Director of Procore UK for over 15 years. Since 2017, the company belongs to the Drees & Sommer group.
Phillip is experienced in managing both building related and consultancy projects, of-ten in occupied areas with tight timescales and budgets and the requirement for close customer liaison.
Examples include the logistical planning of complex multi-phase projects for clients such as Apple, The BBC, Shell and Astellas with a focus on the selection and management of tender processes, contractor selection processes and management of all works on site. His know-how also comprises tender procurement processes for facilities management contracts, ongoing support to clients during the contract period and auditing of FM contracts.
York Alexander von Massenbach
York-Alexander von Massenbach was born in 1983. He studied law at the Universities of Bonn and Göttingen, Germany. After completing his legal traineeship and being admitted to the German Bar, he gained his first professional experience during an EU scholarship at a medium-sized British law firm in Birmingham, England. He joined Luther in 2013. York-Alexander von Massenbach is Co-Chairman of the Regional Committee UK of the British German Chamber of Commerce (BCCG), as well as a member of the British-German Jurists Association.
York-Alexander von Massenbach advises international investors on the acquisition of German companies and in connection with M&A and Real Estate transactions within an international context. He identifies investment opportunities on the German market and in Luther’s other international locations for the PE and fund network of the London office. In addition, he links up German start-ups and growth companies with venture capital investors. He also advises British companies that would like to become active on the German market.
Before founding ÜberRaum Architects, Markus delivered several high-profile buildings for worldrenowned practices in Toronto, Stuttgart and London.
At ÜberRaum, he has led a variety of projects from concept to completion. Markus gained his professional qualifications at the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz, Germany and at UCL in London. Together with his wife and business partner, they lead their London based practice representing public and commercial clients, such as the German Government, the Goethe Institut, ZDF, Degussa and Oracle.
Markus' main expertise is bridging the cultural understanding of the construction industry in Germany and the UK. In this role he is an official advisor to government institutions and author of the book ‘Länderleitfaden Grossbritannien’.
Alex Kaufmann advises corporates and financial institutions on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters and heads our German desk.
He has particular experience in cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital transactions as well as joint ventures. He also frequently advises foreign clients on all aspects of their market entry in the UK.
Alex is a fluent German, French and Romanian speaker. His practice focuses in particular on advising clients from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the French speaking countries in relation to their UK businesses. He is dual qualified in Germany (Rechtsanwalt) and England (solicitor).

Alan Erwin has advised on a wide range of construction projects.He has extensive experience in the drafting and negotiation of construction and engineering contracts and in dealing with the contractual issues which arise during the course of a project. In particular, Alan has dealt with contracts relating to process plants, leisure developments, retail parks, hotels, office blocks, remediation of contaminated land, infrastructure and social housing.
Alan is a fluent German speaker and has advised a number of German and Austrian clients who are active in the construction and engineering sector. He is recommended as a leading individual in construction by Chambers UK and the Legal 500.
